Cannabis Butter

MarijuanaOne of the most basic cannabis recipes is cannabis butter. It is the essential ingredient in many popular recipes such as brownies, cakes, and others. Luckily for us it is also one of the easiest recipes to get a hang of.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb Butter (unsalted)
  • 1 ounce Cannabis (slightly chopped)

The amount of butter and cannabis used can vary depending of how potent you want the end product to be. A batch of brownies typically calls for a 3/4 cup of butter, for use in brownies I recommend at least 3.5 grams (1/8 Ounce) of cannabis be used. For best results I’d use anywhere from 14 grams (1/2 ounce) to an ounce (28 grams). But once again this can vary greatly and in the end it all comes down to personal preference.

For simplicity’s sake we’ll use 1 lb of butter and 1 ounce of cannabis.

Directions:

  1. Melt the butter in a pan/pot (pun intended).
  2. Finely grind or chop the cannabis as small as possible without it being too small that it will fall through our strainer later on.
  3. Once the butter has started boiling we can turn it down to a simmer and add the cannabis.
  4. Stirring occaisonaly wait until the butter has turned green from the marijuana. (The longer the cannabis is being cooked in the butter the more time we allow the THC to be extracted resulting in a more potent result)
  5. Once the butter has turned green we can now remove the leaves by pouring the butter through the strainer.

And we’re done!

At this point we can either freeze/chill it for storage or we can use it as an ingredient in another recipe.

Happy cooking!

For best results, boil the leaves and good trim in water, removing the water every few minutes until it is much lighter in color, then add butter in with move water. when cooled the butter floats to the top.

  2. Hey Guys,

This is a great website… I like the idea being a stoner myself as you might well tell if you check out my pics on my website….

Any psychosis aside this is definately a smart idea, I love getting stoned but don’t digg smoking, it ain’t good for ya…

One thing that’s worth adding is a double boiler is a good way to ensure you don’t do the thc damage!

So if you put your weed and butter into a metal dish and place that into a pan of boiling water that is the ideal way not to burn things…

If you are feeling lazy then mix the butter and the weed and water in a pan and then boil away - you won;t burn things but its not as ideal as my first suggestion..

Anyway enjoy the buzz my friends :)

  3. Chef

    Thanks for the comment Matt!

A double boiler is an excellent idea, I’ll have try it out next time.

  4. Lou Dobbs

What process can I do with the stems? I have heard this method of using 1 oz. of stems using a pound of butter and crock pot and reduce for several hours. Any tips other methods, like I said I got a 1 oz. of stems and lil shake, not 1 oz. of cheeba

  5. CALIGREEN

If you grind up your stems and put them into tea bags you can make stem tea which does the trick. Keep a little of the tea leaves in the bags and just cook it like regular tea.

  6. tweety

I need a little information please. A friend made some butter, but she accidently made it too strong. She made 1 1/2 pounds of butter but she used 1 pound of cannibis. How do I use that in brownies?

    Thank you

  7. GodBud

could you even FIT one pound of bud into 1 1/2 lbs of butter!? i seriously doubt it unless you kept concentrating it over and over.

  8. smokinblu

melt your 1 pd of pot butter, then add a pd till its safe for you wimp!

  9. hassankobe

after your done with the straining…what do you do with the leaves?

  10. baker

i’m a big fan of the crockpot. i put about an ounce of shake (with stems) in a mini crockpot with 3 sticks of butter and a couple ounces of brandy (so there is additional liquid when the butter starts to evaporate) and let it go overnite. the results? tasty and incredibly potent butter that can be used in cooking anything and tastes delcious spread on top of waffles.

  11. I made butter this weekend for the first time in years. I absolutely forgot what a clean, mellow, nice high you got from eating budder. I think my smoking days may be long gone. An aside; it’s probably a lot easier to travel with budder than weed–think about all the ways you could conseal it; lotion bottle, those little herbal things from the Whole Foods Mart. It doesn’t matter if the butter melts and just turns to oil once the THC is in there it doesn’t matter if it’s liquid or solid to get you going. for now I bid you Later Days and Kinder Days….

    PEACE

  12. Hilladelph

in response to Hassankobe- you should throw out the weed once you have extracted the THC into the butter.

  13. Big Daddy

This is a very easy recipe…..i live in Amsterdam so, will definetly be buying up the weed to make a little butter! Does it matter if u use different types of weed?

  14. pat "pot brownie" brown

so has anyone ever tried using smaller amounts of weed (e.g. 1/8 or 1/4 oz.)? is it even worth it to try, or is it just a waste of bud?

  15. Chef

Big Daddy - It doesn’t really matter what kind of weed you use. I prefer to use mid grades or KB. But I prefer to smoke the finer strains.

Lucky bastard, I wish I could be living in Amsterdam. I’d be doing live cooking shows by now if I were living there… ;)

Pat - Go with 1/4. You’ll end up having to use a lot less each time and it should last you longer.

  16. africanqueen

I’ve been told to ADD water as it boils?….
Also, HOW LONG (minutes, hours) should we simmer the mix…
    thankQ

  17. Bab Girl Amor

    I love this website!!!

  18. now i only smoke kb, but if i were to start cooking i would use lower grade quilty regulars, not swagg, just not so good regs. how much of that bud should i use to make o lets say so i could make 5 fairly potent pieces of toast;)

  19. I’d like to add my two cents. I’ve made many batches of cannabutter and cookies/brownies in my day. And only three times have I used bud. In my opinion it’s not necessary unless it’s the only thing you have. One to two ounces of trim or shake into a cup or so of butter/oil will get you so high you’ll be glad that you didn’t waste your bud making it.

As far as the smell goes, as long as you leave the stove fan on the entire time you cook it, they smell should be gone within a few hours. And the smell isn’t bad to me, smells like grimy tea.

Not to step on anyones toes, but here’s the method I’ve used for years -

    Cannabutter Recipe

1 cup of butter (I use earth balance, ‘it’s vegan)
1 oz of weed chopped in a coffee grinder
1 quart (4 cups) of water

Bring water & butter to a boil.
Add weed and turn down to a low simmer.
Cover and simmer for 2+ hours, stirring occasionally (Make sure to lick the spoon after you stir it!)
Strain with cheesecloth or CLEAN pantyhose.
    Refrigerate until the butter sets.
Pour off water or scoop out butter.

Trust me, it’s VERY potent. I usually make vegan chocolate chip cookies with it and one cookie will bake you for 6-8 hours easy. I used to sell them for 10 bucks a pop when I was but a wee lass in high school. I bought my first car selling them, even a few teachers bought some!

    :)

  20. Jason

First off must I say, cooking for a living, this has got to be one of the best websites ever! Besides that, I have been looking for a good recipe for cannabis butter. I have been told by several people that i can use stems. Over the past 2 years I have been saving my stems so I could make me and my friends a nice 7 course meal. I have about 80 grams of stems saved up and I cant seem to find anything out there that calls for stems, its all cannabis, Can anyone help me out?

  21. Chef

    Hey Jason,

Glad you like the site :)

You can still use stems they just probably won’t be as potent and may taste a little funny, but nothing too noticeable.

And saving up 80 grams is pretty damn impressive!

    Chef

  22. Jason

What would the portions be at that point?

  23. Squiggs

Jason, I’d try whizzing up about 10-15 grams of the stems up in a coffee grinder if you have one. If not, try a blender or food processor. If you don’t have any of the above, just cut them up as small as you can.And then follow a cannabutter recipe. I definitely won’t guarantee you’ll get high off of stems, but hey, I’m curious to see if it works! Let us know what happens if you try it. Good luck!

  24. Squiggs

Ooops, I meant 10-15 ounces not grams. There’s very little THC in the stems so you’re gonna need a lot. You could also try the Cannabis Tincture recipe with the stems.

    :)

  25. paulo

I’m a total skeptic, but I’ve now heard a few times that stems cause impotency. Any truth or urban legend B.S.?

  26. Chef

    Paulo - It’s total BS.

  27. YangJimi

I will make budbutter for the first time, How much weed for 2 stick of butter, can i just eat the butter by itself and get high, or with a toast.

  28. Happily High

Can you reuse the choped bud after making butter?

  29. Happily High

Also, what happens when you burn the butter.

  30. Louis

This may sound dumb, but is it possible to make in a microwave?

  31. anothervegan

squiggs, when you say one cup earth balance to 1 oz weed, do you mean leaves or good buds?

do you have to clarify earth balance before you use it? and what kind do you use? thanks for your help!

  32. Happily High

I made the butter, but it wasn’t that strong. I cook Half ounce of weed into Half pound of butter for about 25 minutes. What did I do wrong?

  33. DankNug

Hey everyone I’m planning on making some of this delicious butter for the first time this weekend and I have a couple of questions. First one is do you think about 1/4 ounce of cannabis is enough for 2/3 cup of butter? My second question is can you re-melt the butter after letting it sit in the fridge to cool in the water or will that hurt the THC process?

  34. anothervegan

    hey stonerchef,
think you can answer my question above?

  35. Chef

    AnotherVegan,
Well I have no idea what earth balance is to be honest.

You can use leaves, buds, or stems, obviously the potency will be effected.

If you all would like your questions answered faster, head to the forum.

  36. rolierig

I am pressure cooking two pounds of butter, ten ounces of trim from my D.W.C. Then I add water to cover everything. I cook for 6 to 8 hours, then I put it in a metal bowl and set it out in the snow.

I only make cold candy with the butter. Not baking it at 350F in cookies. I think you vaporize the trichomes in the oven.
I think using it cold is more potent, but what do I know.
    What does anyone else think?
I make “Ganja Goo-Balls” from The Cannabis Cookbook by Tim Pilcher
    1 cup cannabutter
    3 cup oats
    1 cup peanut butter
    3 tbsp honey
    2 tbsp ground cinnamon
    1-2 tbsp cocoa powder

mix it all together in a large bowl then put it in the snow or freezer till firm then roll into balls. I keep them in the freezer and pop one in my mouth when I go out where I can’t smoke. But be very careful, more then two and you better wait to see how high you get.

  37. AfterHours

    Hey Squiggs,

With your cookies, how many grams, would you say, were in each cookie? And what was the effect of one cookie? I’m just trying to get the portions right for a good strong, 1-brownie high. I’m using mid-grade bud. I was thinking half a gram of bud per brownie. What do you think?

  38. AfterHours

Chef, if you can answer any of that, it’d be greatly appreciated too! Thanks a ton, love your site here.

  39. ely

i’m thinkin about using a oz.(weed) and 1 lb(butter) for the recipe, you guys are takling about putting water with the butter and scooping it out. but wouldn’t it be more ethical to boil with water and butter, strain, freeze, then cracking the butter off the chlorophyll filled water seeing how the butter would rise with the thc.? if im right, the butter would rise createing a natural seperated layer of water full of chlorophyll and butter full of thc? thank god i finished IPC in high school

  40. ely

wait, just read squiggs, thx guy, u very seem reliable i will be trying it out tonight and let you people know the end product. watch for me.

  41. ely

btw 1 lb of butter = 2 cups
so 1 oz. should be used per 2 cup of butter from what i’ve read from online recipes.

  42. Man did this work out great for me I made some cookies to take to Orlando to see the RX Bandits and hit up the theme parks and the cookies I made were soooo stoney! I used 6.5 Grams and made about 22 cookies we added a little cinnamon and it gave them like a ginger bread taste!! I will be making this butter more often for sure!!

  43. threadstarter

I have a good brownie recipe that calls for 200 grams of butter. I did the math and to match the recipe found on this page, I would need to use 12.5 grams of marijuana. Does this sound right? Will I get good results?

  44. Wiz

Can you use oil instead of butter?

  45. Jumpin Jahoosaphats

Is it recommended to use only DRIED stems, buds, leaves, etc… or can 1 use freshly harvested plants (i.e male plants just freshly harvested to avoid female plant pollination) and put that in your pot to make your butter?

  46. butteralone

squiggs…..i used your recipe and i dont think it worked…..i put the butter on a piece toast…i used 1/2 oz for 2 sticks of butter, cooked it for 2 hours just simmering it …..is it possible to put to much water….to you have to use the butter and actually bake it????

  47. Butter Maker Experimentator

Hey all - great site Chef and good comments all. Ive been making butter for quite a few months now with my friends leaf since he just chucks it. Ive been experimenting quite a bit with strength, volumes, oil and butter.

heres my take: I use water and butter and boil VERY gently (anything above 110C starts to lose THC, but not much - this temp includes the bottom of the pan, not just the surface of the water, but in my experience, some of the best ‘bits’ of the high! So when baking later, dont bake too hot or too sweet for the best ride- i prefer toast or raw energy balls so as not to lose any THC). Then I just strain and fridge the mix - butter is on top in just a few hours!

regarding strength - this is like cheese - how strong is cheese? well…depends, doesnt it? How strong is the bud (of the leaf you are making with)? I too recommend not to waste bud on this unless its all you got - leaf is either cheap or free and, made properly, will get you more stoned than you could ever get smoking (since you ingest and process it all, rather than exhaling loads of vapour and only taking in a small % of THC each inhale). If you only got bud, then rock on and enjoy!

At this very moment i have a new experiment - chocolate butter! Just added a few spoons of cocoa to the pan mix and am waiting for some friends to check out the results later ;-) Should knock the chlorophyll taste on the head. Also, I soak my leaf overnight in very warm water beforehand to get rid of any water soluble impurities and a whole load of chlorophyll.

Final note on strength. Due to chlorophyl residue, my friends all prefer it strong…no..REALLY strong, so they only need to have a small amount. So, for example, im using 3 ounces of leaf to 250-500g of butter. 500g worked REALLY well - half a teaspoon and you were tripping…properly…for a good 6 hours, too much and you pass out so be careful. This month is the first month of 3 ounce of good leaf to 250g….see ya in a few days with the results! should only need a scrape for a wild ride :-D

NOTE: for those who want to make brownies etc, just treat this strength of butter like concentrated orange juice - when you dilute it with the rest of the butter, its like you made that much cannabutter, but without all the chlorophyll ;-) good luck all!

    Get Utterly Butterly’d!

  48. GBone

Hey Chef and Squiggs, thanx for the 2 receipes. I have never looked at a website like this. Love that 1st amendment!!
So my hubby and I found some weed that my daughter thought that she hid………hahaha……. And we though HappyBrownies!!. Right now we are using the water and butter w/the shake method. I am using Kangen water 9.5pH water. Lets see what happens. I am trying to keep the mixture simmering/evaporating for 1 hour. The consensus seems to be the longer the mixture cooks the better for the THC potency. Will check in later!

  49. GBone

Hey I just finished the water, pot, butter mix. It took about 90mins. I mixed it some Trader Joes Brownie Truffle Baking Mix. There in the oven now. I am going to cook them at 325, so it will take a little longer to cook. And I put some of the clairfied cannabutter on top because I do this with cornbread muffins. I works with them, soooo…………….

  50. GBone

ok, we finished the brownies, and cleaned the kitchen and sat down and we both had a pretty big chunk of brownie. We sat and looked at each other for about a half an hour. Then, we sort of migrated to bed. Good thing we cleaned the kitchen first! What did I do wrong? No high, just heavy sleep. Would one of you stoner chefs weigh in on this? ThankQ

I am now calling all my friends that might have shake to see if I can prefect my cannabutter recipe. I am going to try it again with the double boiler method…

  51. Butter Maker Experimentator

Gbone - depending on how strong your weed was, you probably had too much. Its very common. People think eating isnt that great cos they just go to sleep, but its because they actually ate too much! Either that, or your daughter got a bum deal and all the cooking exhausted you both hahaha!

No, really though, after half an hour only the first inklings of hit would start to arrive - in my experience its usually 1hr before you suddenly realise you’ve been hit by a pan in head, then progressively increases for the next hour or so - if you overdo it, you dont get that far and just pass out - its THC OD.

Keep at it though! To measure strength I recommend testing first - so try a measured amount on some toast or bread and do the most difficult thing in the world when it comes to this kinda game……WAIT :) Good luck

  52. Golden

I just made my first attemped at making cannabutter, it didn’t work out so well. I used 11.5 grams of Bud ( weak ) to 1/2 lb of butter and no high.
I did everything correct accept for the Bud was weak.

  53. Almost 420

Hi everyone I was about to make some butter this week for 420! I have made butter a few times and it has never been as good as I heard it can be. This time I am planning on using the double broiler method. I am going to use 1/4 of some nice stutff and and 1/8 of keef(pure thc) with problably 4 or 5 sitcks of butter. I was going to let it sit for probably around 8 hours on low cookiing. Will i get the best results from this method. And does anyone know if using keef is pointlless or will it make the butter a lot better.

  54. ohsobaked

hey I have a whole bunch of keef and about a half ounce of stems. I was originally gonna get 3 sticks of butter and a couple cups of water and boil the mixture with only the keef. how long should i boil for? should i add the stems?
